2. Read Isaiah 40:9-11 and Isaiah 61:1-2? How do these passages describe the Good News?

3. Why does the Gospel of Matthew immediately begin with a genealogy? What is the Gospel writer trying to teach us about Jesus?

4. Read Matthew 4:23 and Mark 1:14-15. When Jesus calls on people to believe the gospel - what is He announcing about Himself?

5. Read Matthew 11:2-6 and Luke 4:16-30.

• What is Jesus teaching us about the gospel in these texts?

• Why might John and his disciples be offended by Jesus?

• Why did the people of the synagogue get enraged at Jesus?

• What was it about Jesus’ ministry that didn’t meet the expectations

of the Jews?

6. Based upon these texts, what is a more biblical and holistic definition of the gospel?
